Last year I worked on the Hydrogen 2 Heysham (H2H) project for EDF. This was part of a wider government project looking at ways to supply the country with reliable, low carbon hydrogen. We assessed the practicality of taking electricity from the power station to an off-site location where we would have containerised electrolysers which would split water to make hydrogen and oxygen, both of which the power station use: oxygen as part of maintaining gas chemistry and hydrogen is used as a coolant in the generator.
By using electricity from nuclear power there is no carbon dioxide generated in the production of the hydrogen, meaning in can be classified as green hydrogen.
